India Launches Ambitious Census of Over 1 Billion People
India has commenced the world's largest national census, a monumental effort involving more than three million officials tasked to count over 1.4 billion citizens. This extensive data-gathering initiative includes 33 questions such as housing types, internet access, and demographics, marking the first census in over 15 years.
Scheduled to be executed in two phases, this exercise aims not only to record the population accurately but also to gather vital insights into socio-economic conditions. The first phase will focus on collecting information regarding housing conditions, while the second phase, set for February 2027, will delve into demographics and fertility data.
With India overtaking China as the world's most populous country in 2023, ensuring accurate representation through this census is critical for policy formulation and welfare delivery. The move to digitize the census process, through mobile apps and self-enumeration options, is a significant step forward in modernizing the data collection process.
As India approaches this vast endeavor, it faces challenges, as public anxiety grows over the data collection’s potential implications for citizenship and inclusion, especially in light of the evolving socio-political landscape.
