Denmark has urged the US to respect its 'territorial integrity', following the wife of one of Donald Trump's top aides tweeting an altered image of Greenland in the colors of the American flag.
Katie Miller, who is married to the US president's deputy chief of staff, posted the modified map on her X feed late on Saturday, alongside the word 'SOON'.
The Danish ambassador to the US, Jesper Moeller Soerensen, responded by sharing her message while issuing a 'friendly reminder' about the strong defense ties between the two nations.
President Trump has previously voiced the potential of Greenland becoming an annexed part of the US, highlighting its strategic importance and mineral wealth.
His administration's recent move to appoint a special envoy to Greenland stirred controversy in Denmark, a NATO ally that has traditionally maintained a strong rapport with Washington.
Soerensen's response indicated that the US and Denmark are close allies that must continue collaborating closely, noting, 'US security is also Greenland's and Denmark's security.' He added that Greenland is already integrated into NATO, and emphasized Denmark's significant defense funding increase for 2025, amounting to $13.7 billion.
Notably, the forum of this exchange is reinforced by ongoing military operations led by the US, which included a noteworthy action against Venezuela.
Trump has reportedly not dismissed the idea of using force to acquire Greenland, which has a population of approximately 57,000 and has exercised extensive self-governance since 1979, while still having foreign and defense policies overseen by Denmark. While many Greenlanders support independence from Danish rule, polls indicate strong resistance to becoming part of the US.
