The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the country’s history, exceeding 2,300 deaths since the first case was declared on 15 May.
Public health officials say the virus has infected more than 4,900 people, with 101 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The outbreak has spread to six of Congo’s 26 provinces, a pace WHO describes as “exceptional.”
Although no vaccine is yet available for the Bundibugyo strain that has caused the current epidemic, several international teams are testing vaccine candidates built on the AstraZeneca Covid‑19 platform. The UK’s MHRA has granted permission for the first human trials of a Bundibugyo vaccine.
WHO is monitoring the situation closely and is working with local authorities to bring transmission under control within three months. Yet, control does not equal end; the agency warns that more effort and resources are needed to reduce the outbreak’s impact entirely.
A new Ebola treatment centre opened on 4 August in Rwakole, Bunia. The facility, equipped with specialist staff and protective gear, aims to curb further spread and provide care for the infected.
Outside Congo, only 20 cases have now been confirmed in Uganda, with a handful of patients receiving treatment in Germany and France. The global community is watching the response closely, as the virus continues to affect the region’s health infrastructure.
