Singapore announced that it will start deploying 660 new electric buses from the end of 2026, according to a statement by the Land Transport Authority Wednesday. The move is part of the city‑state’s plan to transition its public bus fleet to cleaner energy, with the authority noting that by 2030 half of all city buses will be electric and the entire fleet will run on cleaner energy by 2040.

The new buses will feature step‑free main passageways, green and red stair lighting on double‑deck models, and batteries with increased endurance, the authority said. Those enhancements aim to improve passenger accessibility and reduce operational downtime.

No step in the main lobby will allow easier boarding for the elderly and those with mobility challenges, and the lighting system will alert passengers to stair descent or ascent. The longer battery life means buses may handle more routes before recharging.

The 660-lot rollout is scheduled to begin at the tail end of 2026 and will be phased across the city’s bus corridors over the following years. Each new electric vehicle will be integrated into the existing fleet gradually to maintain reliability and service frequency.

As Singapore works toward a 2030 milestone of 50 percent electric buses, the Authority will also focus on supporting infrastructure such as charging stations and battery swapping facilities, although those details remain to be announced later in the year.
