In brief
Seven trekkers who vanished on the Kedartal trail on Oct. 29 have been retrieved, while one remains missing. Authorities have air‑lifted the bodies to Matli Helipad and are arranging handover to families. Conflicting reports from a Facebook post suggest a higher death toll, but that remains unconfirmed.
Seven bodies of trekkers who disappeared on Nov. 6 from Uttarakhand’s Kedartal trail have been retrieved, while one remains missing, a local government official said on Friday, Xinhua reported.
The party of eight – one trekking guide and seven participants, most from West Bengal – went missing on the Kedartal trek in Uttarkashi district when heavy snowfall and avalanches hit on Oct. 29. The multi‑agency search and rescue mission was repeatedly hampered by harsh weather.
According to the officials, the recovered bodies were air‑lifted to Matli Helipad in Uttarkashi, and authorities are arranging to hand them over to their families.
The Hindu newspaper, reporting on Nov. 4, identified two of the recovered bodies as Rintu Mondol, 40, and Uday Ghosh, 30, both from the group that vanished.
Unconfirmed Reports
A Facebook post by Mathrubhumi English, posted 22 minutes ago, claims that 10 people were killed in the avalanche in Uttarkashi district, with 8 rescued and 11 still missing. The post does not provide details on whether these figures refer to the same incident described by Xinhua, and the numbers differ from the confirmed count of seven bodies recovered.
Search operations continue, with authorities still looking for the missing trekker. The evolving situation remains under monitoring as the region deals with severe weather conditions.
