NTT Docomo Inc. said Thursday it was experiencing a nationwide outage that began around 11:18 a.m., leaving users unable to make voice calls, access mobile data or send text messages across Japan. The carrier added that services provided by other mobile providers using its network were also unstable.
Earlier that day, Docomo suspended its online shop and the My Docomo customer‑portal services at about 1:05 a.m. after concluding that an outside party had likely gained unauthorized access to its servers. The shutdown left customers unable to sign up for new mobile plans, check their bills or make contract changes.
The carrier is investigating whether the suspected cyber intrusion is linked to the broader service disruptions and whether it affected emergency calling. The extent of any impact on emergency services remains unconfirmed as Docomo continues its review.
