In brief

Japan's electric vehicle sales surpassed 100,000 units in the first ten months of 2026, totaling 111,876 vehicles. The majority were standard and compact passenger cars, while ultracompact models accounted for the remainder. The high demand has led the Japanese government to plan closing the current subsidy program in December and reducing subsidy amounts in January 2027.

Japan’s electric vehicle sales surpassed the 100,000‑unit threshold in the first ten months of 2026, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association, as reported by Xinhua on Friday.

In that period—January through October—111,876 EVs were sold, with 95,614 being standard and compact electric passenger cars and 16,262 ultracompact electric vehicles.

The Japanese government currently offers subsidies of up to 1.3 million yen (about $8,200) for EV purchases. Xinhua noted that amid strong sales, applications for the existing subsidy program are expected to close as early as December, and the subsidy amounts will be reduced from January next year.

Local media coverage highlighted the surge as a sign of growing consumer demand and a potential shift in the automotive market toward electrification.

Officials have not yet finalized legislative changes, but the expectation to end the subsidy program is part of an ongoing review of the current incentives. The decision will come in light of the record sales figures reported for 2026.
