On Sunday, Boniface Mwangi, a well-known activist in Kenya, was charged with “facilitation of terrorist acts” tied to the anti-government protests that erupted last month, resulting in at least 19 deaths. The protests, characterized by violent clashes between police and demonstrators, have been pointedly criticized, with the Interior Minister labeling them as "terrorism disguised as dissent." Following his arrest, Mwangi's property was searched, leading to the seizure of various items, including a laptop and ammunition. This legal action has incited a wave of international condemnation from over 37 human rights groups, who regard the charges as a government effort to stifle dissent and suppress opposition voices. Politicians have also rallied in support of Mwangi, arguing that charging a politically active individual with terrorism is absurd. The unrest in Kenya is said to have claimed more than 100 lives over the past year, highlighting the ongoing tensions regarding government accountability and police conduct.
