In brief

Tensions escalate further as Israel disputes the identity of a returned body claimed by Hamas to be a hostage, raising concerns about the viability of ongoing negotiations.

Israel announced today that the remains reportedly returned by Hamas as part of a ceasefire deal do not belong to Shiri Bibas, an Israeli woman abducted in 2023, despite Hamas's assertions. The body was part of a convoluted exchange that has further strained the delicate truce and negotiations surrounding hostage swaps. Hamas had asserted that it returned the remains of four hostages, including 32-year-old Shiri Bibas and her two young children, Ariel and Kfir, along with 83-year-old Oded Lifshitz. All were taken during the violent incursion into Israel on October 7, 2023. The kidnapping of Shiri Bibas became a symbol of the terror faced by many Israelis when harrowing footage emerged showing her being led away while clutching her children. While Hamas claimed the hostages were killed in Israeli airstrikes, Israel responded by stating DNA tests confirmed that only Lifshitz and the two Bibas children were among the returned remains, and they were allegedly murdered by their captors. On Thursday, Hamas ceremoniously handed over four coffins to the International Committee of the Red Cross, each bearing the likeness of the captives they were purportedly returning, including Bibas. However, the developments have only intensified the current crisis and the uncertainty surrounding future exchanges.
