Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the US is eager to bring an end to the ongoing war with Russia by June, stating that both countries have been invited to negotiate in the US next week. America proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams – Ukraine and Russia – meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week. We confirmed our participation, Zelensky noted.
While no immediate comments have come from Washington or Moscow, US President Donald Trump has been advocating for the conflict's resolution since his return to office over a year ago. As peace efforts progress, Russian military actions continue to target Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing extensive power outages amid severe winter conditions.
During comments released following recent US-brokered talks in Abu Dhabi, Zelensky highlighted persistent challenges, including territorial concessions that Ukraine is being pressured to make. He emphasized the necessity for further preparations before a potential trilateral meeting of leaders.
Zelensky expressed concern that US domestic issues would influence the timeline for an agreement, highlighting the anticipated impact of the November midterm elections on the US government's approach to the conflict.
Despite diplomatic overtures, Russia has sustained its attacks on Ukraine, particularly targeting its energy grid, which has led to increased blackouts in the harsh winter conditions. Ukraine's Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal condemned another significant assault on energy facilities and indicated that assistance from neighboring Poland has been sought for emergency power supplies.
Amidst the airstrikes, Ukrainian officials have reported infrastructure damage across multiple regions, including Lviv and Rivne, with casualties and significant disruption to daily life for citizens forced to seek refuge in metro stations during the attacks. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military has also undertaken strikes against Russian targets, signaling a continuation of hostilities on both sides.
