Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned as terrorism a Russian drone attack on a crowded passenger train that local officials say killed at least five people and injured several others. More than 200 people were on the train when one of the carriages was hit by a drone and two other drones exploded nearby, in Ukraine's north-eastern Kharkiv region. Zelensky noted that 18 individuals were in the targeted carriage, emphasizing there was no military justification for such an assault.
Russia has not commented on the strike, but it has intensified drone and missile attacks on Ukraine's energy and transport infrastructure during the harshest winter in years. Elsewhere in Ukraine, the southern port city of Odesa experienced a similar assault with dozens of drones, leading to three fatalities and numerous injuries. Energy officials reported significant damage to local facilities following these attacks.
In another tragic incident, a couple died and their four-year-old child was wounded when a residential building near Kyiv was struck. With millions suffering from the loss of heating, electricity, and water, Zelensky highlighted the gravity of the situation in a social media post, asserting that a drone strike on a civilian train would universally be regarded as terrorism. Footage released by Ukraine's emergency services showcased the devastation of the attack.
The train strike occurred near Yazykove village, affecting a line frequently used by civilians and soldiers. Despite ongoing negotiations in the United Arab Emirates aimed at resolving the conflict, Russia's aerial assaults persist unabated, highlighting the fragile state of peace discussions.
