Zambia's president has weighed into a cultural debate that has erupted online after the president of Ghana arrived in Zambia wearing a traditional outfit called a fugu. Some Zambians mockingly called it a blouse.

However, Zambia's leader hit back by sharing his love for the design, stating he would be ordering more of that stuff for himself, in a video posted on X from the Ghana-Zambia Business Forum held in Lusaka this week.

Ghana's foreign minister noted that the social media buzz reflects a desire among young people to reclaim their cultural roots. The initiative to promote traditional outfits in Ghana has sparked events like Fugu Friday, where people wear African clothing.

The controversy began when Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama wore the fugu during a three-day state visit to Zambia, contrasting with Hichilema's formal suit. This resulted in a wave of mocking comments from Zambians online, with some calling it a ''maternity blouse''. Responding to the ridicule, Hichilema publicly admired the outfit, calling for more to be ordered.

Mahama's appearance in the culturally significant fugu, a hand-woven garment, was defended by Ghanaian officials who highlighted its importance to African identity. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa commented on the attire's historical significance, suggesting that the increased interest is part of a renaissance of African culture among the youth.

In a recent video discussion, Ghanaian influencers reinforced this narrative, promoting the importance of traditional garments. The dialogue surrounding fugu has ignited appreciation for cultural expression and identity across African nations.
