MADISON, Wis. (RTWNews) — The universities of Wisconsin system president Jay Rothman is facing the possibility of termination during a closed-door meeting of the Board of Regents. The board has scheduled a session for 6 p.m. EDT to consider whether Rothman, who has assumed leadership for over four years, will be dismissed. Specific reasons for this consideration have yet to be disclosed by the Regents.
The urgency of the meeting arises just days after reports indicated that Rothman was asked to either resign or be removed from his position. He has responded, stating that he will not step down voluntarily without understanding what led to the loss of confidence in his leadership.
Regent President Amy Bogost released a statement indicating that the board has communicated performance reviews and expectations directly with Rothman, asserting that the system requires a coherent vision for the future, although details of the findings of the review were not shared.
The uncertain future for Rothman has incited criticism from Republican legislators, who assert that lack of transparency regarding the situation is unacceptable. GOP state Rep. David Murphy emphasized the need for clarity, stating that President Rothman deserves to know why confidence in his leadership has waned.
Since taking office in January 2022, Rothman has been instrumental in advocating for financial support for the university system amidst budget challenges, addressing campus issues, and managing declining enrollments that have resulted in several campus closures. He has also navigated through controversies surrounding free speech and other pressing matters while working within a political landscape where Republicans primarily control state funding.
The backdrop to this deliberation comes as the flagship campus in Madison also prepares for the departure of its chancellor, Jennifer Mnookin, who will leave to lead Columbia University come May. Rothman, who receives an annual salary exceeding $600,000, is under a contract that stipulates a six-month notification period prior to termination.
