LOS ANGELES (RTWNews) — Following a series of sexual misconduct allegations, Democratic U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell has suspended his campaign for California governor and announced his resignation from Congress. His swift exit has reshaped the crowded Democratic primary race just weeks before mail-in ballots are distributed in May.
Swalwell, once viewed as a frontrunner to succeed outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom, issued a statement expressing his intention to fight the allegations, insisting they are false. Nevertheless, the fallout from this controversy has opened the door for other candidates in a landscape that is now more unpredictable than ever.
The first appearance of remaining candidates will take place this Tuesday in Sacramento, marking the beginning of a new phase in the campaign as they seek to attract Swalwell's supporters. The upcoming primary on June 2 features more than 50 candidates, raising concerns within the Democratic party about vote splitting, which could potentially allow Republicans to dominate the general election ballot.
Currently, the Republicans have not united behind a single candidate. Endorsements from figures like former President Donald Trump, who has backed conservative commentator Steve Hilton, have created a division amongst Republican voters that complicates their strategy.
Allegations against Swalwell came to public attention through reports in major news outlets, leading to a wave of withdrawals of support from various elected officials. His exit raises questions about where his supporters will migrate in the absence of a clear successor.
Prominent Democratic figures such as billionaire Tom Steyer, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and congresswoman Katie Porter are already positioning themselves to capture disillusioned voters from Swalwell’s camp. However, the broader Democratic strategy remains challenged, with many not having established a robust connection with constituents statewide.
While Swalwell's name will still appear on the ballot, his campaign's collapse highlights the fragility of political careers amid allegations of misconduct. With numerous candidates in play, only time will reveal who will emerge as the leading contender for California's governor seat.
