Virginia State University Shooting: Five Injured, One Critical

Five people have been injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University which involved multiple suspects, the university says.

Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall around 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT) on Saturday.

All five individuals were found with gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals. The university reported that four of them had injuries that were not considered life‑threatening.

At this stage it is not clear whether any suspects have been arrested. The BBC has contacted local police for comment.

A temporary lockdown of the campus has since been lifted, but a “significant” law‑enforcement presence remains on site, the university confirmed in a statement.

Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from other local law‑enforcement agencies and campus police.

Virginia State University, with around 5,000 students, is located just over 20 miles south of Richmond, the capital of Virginia. It is also one of the country’s historically black colleges and universities, founded to provide higher education to African Americans who were otherwise barred from most institutions.

According to the university’s website, classes for the new term were set to begin on Monday.
