Egyptian authorities have arrested several people linked to an alleged fraud ring that involved staging fake courtroom scenes and impersonating judges on social media.
The Ministry of Interior stated that the suspects – an unemployed man and a Cairo‑Giza student – confessed to forming a criminal gang that stole money from citizens by falsely claiming they could secure government‑issued housing. The scheme relied on actors wearing judicial sashes and filming staged court hearings to lend credibility to the ruse.
The plot came to light when a victim reported being cheated by a man who presented himself as a judge. Police seized a firearm, a fabricated judicial sash, and identity documents bearing a fake judicial title. The lead suspect admitted to filming photographs and videos inside a courthouse while wearing the sash to enhance his purported authority.
The second suspect admitted to publishing images and videos on social media while claiming a judicial position. Court workers involved in the operation were also detained and questioned. The case is slated for a fast‑track criminal trial.
