Swiss Rave Shooting: 22-Year-Old Italian Woman Killed, Man Arrested

Police cordoned off area after shooting

Swiss authorities have arrested a 43-year-old man after a night of gunfire at an illegal techno rave in Aarau, which claimed the life of a 22‑year‑old Italian woman.

The shooting, which began around 02:30 a.m. Sunday, turned an otherwise vibrant music event into a tragedy. Italian Maria Spinelli was killed on site, while four men and a woman were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

A 24‑hour search and police mobilisation culminated early Monday with the suspect detained before 1:00 a.m. local time.

Police admit the motive remains unclear, but say the perpetrator is believed to have acted alone. The incident has drawn attention from Italy’s prime minister, who urged Swiss forces to solve the case promptly.

Armed with high gun ownership but low violence rates, Switzerland faces ongoing discussions on tighter firearm controls since the last major mass shooting in 2001.
