Brendan Banfield, a Virginia man embroiled in a complex case of murder and infidelity, was found guilty on Monday of killing his wife and another man, in a case that drew significant media attention.

The jury deliberated for nearly nine hours before reaching a verdict. The incident occurred on February 24, 2023, when Banfield shot Joseph Ryan, who he claimed was attacking his wife, Christine Banfield, with a knife. However, prosecutors argued that Banfield had orchestrated the entire scenario to eliminate his wife and shift blame onto Ryan.

Key evidence in the trial included the testimony of Juliana Magalhães, the couple's Brazilian au pair, who admitted to her role in the crime. Magalhães had been having an affair with Banfield and, in a shocking twist, both had previously impersonated Christine to lure Ryan to their home under false pretenses. She later pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a separate agreement with prosecutors.

Defense attorney John Carroll contended that Magalhães' testimony was unreliable due to her plea agreement, asserting that she sought to minimize her own punishment. He emphasized inconsistencies in the evidence, including internal dissent within the police department regarding the investigation's direction.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Jenna Sands highlighted the evidence beyond Magalhães' testimony, including expert analysis of blood evidence linking Ryan to the crime scenario. Banfield now faces the prospect of life in prison at his upcoming sentencing, while Magalhães is expected to be sentenced shortly thereafter.
