A Venezuelan man pleaded his case to asylum officials on Thursday through an interview held in California, as his wife, a well-known doctor in Texas, was detained at the airport with their 5-year-old daughter.
Milenko Faria was interviewed at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices while Dr. Rubeliz Bolivar, now in immigration custody for nearly a week, was unable to attend the crucial asylum meeting they had waited over ten years for.
Bolivar, who worked in McAllen, Texas, was arrested by Border Patrol agents on Saturday at the McAllen International Airport, where she was preparing to board a flight to join her husband and participate in their asylum interview together.
As she faced detention, Bolivar’s situation has sparked a discussion about the impact of immigration enforcement policies. The couple had previously applied for Temporary Protected Status, which was terminated, leaving Bolivar without legal status since her visa expired in 2017.
The couple, who had been living apart for the past year during Bolivar's medical residency, have not broken any laws while seeking residency, according to Faria. The situation highlights the struggles many immigrant families face amid changing immigration laws and enforcement policies.
Faria articulated the joy that came with Bolivar's acceptance into a residency program, emphasizing her dedication to serving their community by working in an underserved area. Yet, within days of her promising career beginning, their lives were upended by a sudden immigration detention.
Following her initial arrest, Bolivar’s daughter was placed into custody and later transferred to the care of her grandfather after 19 hours. The family remains hopeful for her release but uncertain about their future in the U.S.
