The UK has accused Russia of running a covert submarine operation over its vital undersea cables and pipelines. Defence Secretary John Healey disclosed that three Russian submarines were tracked in the operation, which occurred in waters north of the UK.
In response to this behavior, a British warship and aircraft were dispatched to deter what Healey characterized as malign activities from Moscow. Fortunately, no damage to UK infrastructure in the Atlantic was reported.
Directly addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin, Healey stated, We see you. We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences. This stern warning underscores the UK's commitment to protecting its critical infrastructure.
The Russian embassy in London has denied these allegations, with Moscow's state news agency Tass reporting that Russia was not threatening underwater infrastructure, which is truly critical to the UK. The UK's reliance on its undersea cables is significant, as around 60 cables are located along its coast, particularly in East Anglia and South West England, with more than 90% of the country's day-to-day internet traffic transmitted via these routes.
During a press conference, Healey noted that Russia deployed an Akula class submarine as a distraction while two GUGI spy submarines conducted surveillance of these critical cables. The attacking submarine left UK waters after being monitored, but the GUGI vessels remained, raising concerns about Russian intentions.
The UK Royal Navy took active measures in monitoring these vessels, asserting their presence and ensuring that Russian operations were tracked, with Healey stating, We watched them, we were able to track them, we dropped sonar buoys to demonstrate to them that we were monitoring every hour of their operation. This dedication to vigilance reflects the UK's broader strategy to counter potential threats to its national security.
As geopolitical tensions continue, this incident highlights the intricate relationship between national security and critical infrastructure reliance. Britain's focus on undersea security has grown, with calls from various political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizing the importance of action against perceived Russian aggression.
