Eight children, aged from one to fourteen years old, have been killed in a shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, which police are describing as a domestic disturbance. Officers said the shootings occurred around 5:00 a.m. local time when a single gunman shot ten people. Police chased and killed the suspected shooter as he was fleeing.
We have hurting families, we have hurting police officers, coroners' personnel, Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said. This affects the entire community, so we all mourn with these families.
Police did not identify the gunman or the victims, but noted that some of the children were related to the deceased man. This is a tragic situation - maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had in Shreveport, the mayor added, calling for prayers for the families and the city.
The shooting took place across multiple locations, including two residences on the same block and a third in another neighborhood. Shreveport Police Corporal Chris Bordelon reported that officers arrived shortly before 6:00 a.m. local time and found the children. All of the deceased in this case are juveniles, he noted.
Bordelon specified that the situation was determined to be domestic in nature, indicating that one of those shot had fled to another home. Following the shooting, the gunman stole a vehicle and began to flee. Officers pursued him into another neighborhood, ultimately leading to a confrontation where the suspect was killed.
Police have refrained from releasing the names of those involved until family members are notified. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed his condolences to the community, stating, I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with cooperation from the Louisiana state police and other agencies to unravel the details of this tragic event. We are going to be working diligently however long it takes to get some answers to what has taken place, he said.
