FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter responding to assist officers with an active shooter situation crashed, killing both the pilot and a trooper who was a paramedic on board, authorities said. A Ranger helicopter crew was deployed to assist the Flagstaff Police Department and other law enforcement agencies on Wednesday night, disclosed Sgt. Kameron Lee of the department in a statement.

“Tragically, during the incident, the helicopter crashed, killing both the pilot and the trooper/paramedic on board,” Lee reported. While the identities of the pilot and trooper have not yet been made public, law enforcement is working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Correspondence seeking further details was dispatched to both agencies early Thursday.

The department’s Air Rescue Unit, known for its expertise in high-risk operations, including mountain and water rescues, was involved in this tragic event. The suspect associated with the shooting sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds and has been taken into custody. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported during this unfortunate incident.}
