WILMINGTON, Del. (RTWNews) — In a shocking development, William Stevenson, the first husband of current first lady Jill Biden, has been charged with killing his wife at their Delaware residence in late December. The announcement was made via a news release from local authorities on Tuesday.
Stevenson, who is 77 years old and resides in Wilmington, was married to Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975. According to Caroline Harrison, a spokesperson for the Delaware Attorney General, Stevenson is indeed the former spouse of Jill Biden.
When approached for comments regarding the allegations, Jill Biden chose not to respond, indicating so through a spokesperson connected to her office.
Currently, Stevenson remains in custody after he was unable to post bail, set at $500,000, following his arrest on murder charges on Monday. He faces serious allegations regarding the death of his wife Linda, 64, who was found unresponsive after police responded to a domestic dispute call at their home on December 28. Attempts to revive her at the scene were unsuccessful.
Linda, known for her bookkeeping business, was remembered in her obituary as a devoted mother, grandmother, and a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, although the obituary does not reference her husband.
A grand jury indictment has followed a weeks-long investigation led by detectives from the Delaware Department of Justice, but it remains unclear if Stevenson has secured legal representation.
Previously, Stevenson was known for founding the popular music venue Stone Balloon in Newark during the early 1970s. Additionally, during an interview with the conservative news network Newsmax in 2024, he made disparaging remarks about Jill Biden and characterized their divorce as contentious, labeling her as bitter and nasty.
Jill Biden later married U.S. Senator Joe Biden in 1977, and he served as President from January 2021 to January 2025.
