LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — In a tragic event that unfolded at a hotel near Stone Mountain, Georgia, a police officer was shot and killed while attempting to communicate with a suspect regarding fraudulent activity linked to a credit card. Officer Pradeep Tamang, only 25, succumbed to his injuries later at a local hospital.
During the incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, Officer David Reed sustained serious injuries and remains in stable condition. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews from Decatur, Georgia, invited the officers into his hotel room before opening fire.
Police Chief J.D. McClure addressed the media, detailing the sequence of events that led to the shootout. Officers were dispatched after a report of fraudulent credit card use at the hotel, and upon arriving, they were directed to Andrews' room by the front desk staff.
Upon their entry, a conversation unfolded until Andrews suddenly fired a handgun at the officers in an unprovoked attack. McClure noted that one of the officers was able to return fire, injuring Andrews, who is now receiving medical treatment.
Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, acknowledging the risks faced by law enforcement personnel. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now overseeing the investigation to determine the appropriate charges against Andrews.
