ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — A grim atmosphere enveloped South Carolina State University after a shooting incident claimed the lives of two individuals and left another person wounded. The tragedy unfolded at a residential complex around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, prompting university officials to initiate a lockdown that continued until about 5 a.m. Friday.

Details about the victims have yet to be released, along with the current health status of the wounded individual, as the university continues to manage the aftermath of the incident.

Eyewitness Kaya Mack, who had just completed a food delivery on campus, recounted the horrifying moments when she heard gunfire. Their loud sirens kind of shook me, she shared with WLTX-TV, describing the confusion as students and residents sought to understand the nature of the emergency.

Law enforcement has been actively patrolling the university campus and surrounding areas in response to the shooting, and the State Law Enforcement Division is now leading the investigation.

Due to the tragic events, all classes scheduled for Friday have been canceled, and the university has extended support to its students through counseling services.
