Across the nation, school crossing guards play a crucial role in ensuring children's safety as they travel to and from school. While many crossing guards report that their work is fulfilling, a recent investigation by the Associated Press (AP) and Cox Media Group highlights the dangers they encounter on the job.

Key findings from the investigation indicate that there is no organized method for tracking injuries or fatalities among crossing guards. Data collected shows that over the last ten years, at least 230 crossing guards from various states and Washington, D.C. have been struck by vehicles, resulting in nearly three dozen deaths. This number likely does not encompass the total injuries sustained nationwide.

It’s striking that in many incidents involving crossing guards, drivers rarely face severe consequences, and when charges are brought, they are often light. From the 183 incidents assessed, nearly half resulted in minor traffic citations, while a significant portion of drivers faced no legal repercussions.

Furthermore, federal data suggests that the profession of crossing guard is among the most hazardous, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics grouping them with road construction flaggers, yet omitting a distinct fatality rate for this occupation. An analysis conducted by the AP suggests that crossing guards rank in the top tiers of most dangerous jobs.

Only a couple of states, New Jersey and Massachusetts, have initiated robust measures to track and improve crossing guard safety, largely in response to tragic fatalities involving guards. These states have implemented safety inspections and mandated incident reporting.

Experts point to several factors contributing to the high risk of this job, including the prevalence of distracted driving, increasing vehicle sizes that obscure visibility, and a lack of effective traffic safety measures.

The vulnerability of crossing guards is further compounded by the fact that many are senior citizens, often in their late sixties or older. With these alarming statistics and conditions, a concerted effort for improved safety measures and accountability for drivers involved in accidents is imminent.

This report serves as a critical call to action to enhance the safety of those dedicated to protecting our children on their daily journeys.
