Suspect Arrested Following Deadly Car Bombing in Delhi

A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly car bomb attack that killed eight people and wounded 20 others in Delhi last week, authorities have said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) reported that the car used in the attack, which the government has characterized as a terrorist incident, was registered in the name of the arrested suspect, who is a resident of Indian-administered Kashmir.

The explosion, which occurred near a metro station close to the historic Red Fort, took place at approximately 18:52 local time when a slow-moving vehicle halted at a busy traffic signal and detonated.

Within hours, Home Minister Shah confirmed that the explosion involved a white Hyundai i20. Footage from the scene showed the remnants of a charred vehicle surrounded by other damaged cars, including an autorickshaw and several cycle rickshaws.

This incident marks the first such explosion in the heavily secured city since 2011, highlighting serious security concerns in a location frequented by tourists.

The NIA has also seized another vehicle allegedly associated with the suicide bomber for further examination and has interrogated 73 witnesses, including victims of the blast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi denounced the attack as a conspiracy and vowed to bring the culprits and their collaborators to justice. Meanwhile, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his heartbreak over the tragedy.

Investigations are ongoing to explore potential connections to recent arrests in Indian-administered Kashmir and a major seizure of explosives from a suburb of Delhi. The historic Red Fort, built in the 17th Century, serves as a backdrop for India's annual Independence Day speeches and typically attracts thousands of visitors each day.
