NEW YORK (RTW News) — This is not the run-up to the midterm elections that Republicans anticipated.
A year and a half after securing the presidency by promising lower costs and an end to wars, Donald Trump finds himself as a wartime president overseeing surging energy prices and escalating overseas conflicts that are causing rifts within his own party.
In a prime-time address from the White House, his first since the U.S. and Israel initiated strikes against Iran, Trump both suggested the war was nearing its conclusion while simultaneously indicating it was far from over. He stated, “Thanks to the progress we’ve made, I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly.” He concluded with a promise to strike “extremely hard” over the coming weeks.
With elections just months away to determine control of Congress, Republican leaders are anxious about a political backlash. Veteran pollster Neil Newhouse warned, “You’re looking at an ugly November.” Their previous confidence in retaining a slim House majority is waning as Democrats gain traction.
Internally, the party struggles to rally around a clear message regarding the conflict in Iran, with many candidates avoiding the subject altogether. This hesitance exemplifies the broader apprehension surrounding Trump’s handling of significant military actions that have sparked public discontent.
Polling indicators show around 60% of U.S. adults feel the military response has gone too far, and even a substantial portion of Republicans oppose sending U.S. ground troops into Iran. Approval ratings for Trump are stagnant, and many in the party acknowledge that he has failed to rally the same support that President George W. Bush saw following the initiation of the Iraq War.
As uncertain times loom, Trump's ability to navigate the war's outcome effectively could be pivotal for the Republicans. Public sentiment indicates a clear desire for diplomatic resolutions and economic relief rather than extended military conflict.
