Actor James Tolkan, known for his roles as a cigar-chomping naval commander in “Top Gun” and as a gruff high school administrator in “Back to the Future,” has died. He was 94.
Tolkan died Thursday in Lake Placid, New York, where he lived, according to his booking agent, John Alcantar. A brief obituary published on the “Back to the Future” website noted that Tolkan passed away “peacefully,” although no cause of death was disclosed.
In “Back to the Future,” Tolkan played the role of vice principal Gerald Strickland, known for his sharp eye and disdain for students, particularly Marty McFly, portrayed by Michael J. Fox. One of his memorable lines from the 1985 film was, “You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.”
Tolkan also made a notable appearance in “Top Gun” as the commanding officer Tom “Stinger” Jardian. During a pivotal scene, as Jardian speaks to Tom Cruise’s character, Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, about his future plans, he humorously replies, “God help us.”
Born in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan graduated from high school in Arizona before serving in the Navy during the Korean War. He spent years in New York’s theater scene, becoming a member of the original ensemble cast of the acclaimed play “Glengarry Glen Ross.”
Tolkan leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Parmelee Welles, who stated that he was also an enthusiastic art collector and had a deep affection for animals.
