In brief
National security officials are alarmed after a hacking group with ties to China accessed the telecommunications networks of notable individuals, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner. The breach has raised concerns about internal U.S. policymaking being exposed to foreign interests.
In a significant national security incident, it has been revealed that a hacking group connected to China targeted high-profile figures from both the Trump family and the Biden administration. The operation, which has alarmed officials for its implications on U.S. security, was able to infiltrate telecommunications companies to access communications of under 100 individuals deemed important by Chinese authorities.Among those targeted were former President Donald Trump, his son Eric Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner. The hackers also sought access to phones of key members of Vice President Kamala Harris’s team, as well as various policy experts whose knowledge could be beneficial to the Chinese government. So far, it remains unknown if any sensitive data was successfully extracted from the targeted devices. In light of this serious breach, Eric Trump expressed his frustrations by blaming the current administration, stating, “Does this surprise anyone? Under Kamala and Biden, China has walked all over our country.” Meanwhile, aides to Kushner have not provided any comments regarding the incident. It was brought to the Trump campaign's attention last week that phone systems used by Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, were included in the compromised network. Other individuals targeted are reportedly receiving similar alerts from U.S. intelligence sources, highlighting the broader scope of this security situation, which also encompassed several Democrats, including personnel within Senator Chuck Schumer's team. The growing number of breaches and efforts to infiltrate the communications of prominent U.S. figures underscores the ongoing threats posed by foreign hacking groups and raises serious concerns about the integrity of information security in sensitive political matters.
