SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) — Messy winter weather brought snow, ice, freezing rain, and dangerous driving conditions to New England on Wednesday, prompting schools to close and drivers to exercise caution.
The combination of rain, snow, and slush covered areas, causing numerous disruptions, including delayed openings and complete school closures across various districts. While snow accumulations were not significant, the icy conditions made travel treacherous.
Highway authorities in states like Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts reported a series of accidents due to the slippery roads but fortunately no serious injuries as of late Wednesday morning. Airports, such as Logan International in Boston, treated aircraft with deicing fluid as winter storms persisted.
About a tenth of an inch of ice was reported in some areas, which, while less than enough to cause widespread power outages, added to unsafe driving conditions. Despite this, power outages were reported, primarily in Maine and Massachusetts.
In southern Maine, weather advisories were issued despite forecasts predicting only a couple of inches of snow in some regions. Meteorologist Jerry Combs noted that additional winter systems may emerge soon, bringing rain followed by a drop in temperatures, further complicating the already challenging weather conditions.
Responding to concerns about student safety, Maine Regional School Unit 21 announced it was prioritizing the well-being of both students and staff during hazardous weather, stating, With icy conditions forecast for both morning and afternoon bus routes, ensuring safety is our highest priority.
All six New England states remain under winter weather advisories, with potential hazardous weather outlooks in store. Communities brace for more wintery weather to come in the following days. Thus, residents are reminded to stay informed and travel safely.
