On Tuesday afternoon, Russia launched an unusual daytime attack on Ukraine, deploying over 400 drones across the western regions of the country. Lviv regional head Maksym Kozytskyi reported damage to the historic Bernardine monastery, a 16th-century UNESCO site, as flames engulfed a nearby residential building.
In addition to Lviv, other cities targeted included Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, and Ternopil. Reports from the Ivano-Frankivsk region indicated that two individuals perished in the attacks, with four others injured, including a six-year-old child, in a bombardment that also damaged a maternity hospital.
Lviv’s Mayor Andriy Sadovyi announced that 13 residents were hurt in his city and cautioned that the number might continue to rise as emergency services assess the impact of the strikes.
This large-scale drone offensive followed overnight attacks that resulted in at least five deaths across various regions including Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Poltava. Yurii Ihnat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, noted the extensive scope of these daytime strikes, marking it as one of the largest assaults within a 24-hour period, emphasizing that this reflects a troubling escalation in the conflict.
While the ongoing war has touched every corner of Ukraine, the western regions have previously experienced less intensity and frequency of assaults compared to eastern areas closer to the Russian border.
