SANTA FE, N.M. — Two landmark jury verdicts against social media companies have been reached, marking a significant wave of legal actions focused on the mental health risks these platforms pose to children. A total financial penalty of $381 million related to the cases underlines a critical shift in public awareness of social media responsibility.
The recent verdicts from New Mexico and California highlight concerns about the impact of social media platforms on youth mental health, as more lawsuits are expected to emerge in the coming months. However, it remains uncertain whether these verdicts will lead to meaningful changes in how social media platforms operate or alter the algorithms that govern user engagement.
Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, reported $201 billion in sales last year, making the $375 million in damages from the New Mexico case relatively minor in comparison. The jury found that Meta not only harmed children’s mental health but also concealed information regarding child sexual exploitation happening on its platforms. Meta intends to appeal this verdict.
Investors appear unfazed by the recent verdicts, as evidenced by the slight uptick in Meta’s stock value even amidst an overall 8% decline this year.
The verdicts themselves did not mandate immediate changes to Meta's design or functionality, but a subsequent phase of the trial may require alterations based on findings about public nuisance.
