LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — Just a stone's throw from the home of Celeste Rivas Hernandez lies the high school she never had the chance to attend. A multitude of college flags flutters in the breeze, showcasing the dreams of students who have left the small town of Lake Elsinore in Southern California. However, Celeste’s story ended abruptly — brutally and unjustly.
Tragically, Celeste was killed just shy of her 15th birthday, with an autopsy report released indicating that she still sported braces when she died. Her decomposed and dismembered body was discovered inside a vehicle registered to musician D4vd (David Burke). The 21-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder but has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Few details are available regarding the nature of Celeste’s relationship with Burke, leading many to question how she came to be linked to the artist who has captured attention with his rise in the music scene. Celeste’s short life was characterized by the playful joys of childhood and, sadly, the tragedy of her untimely death.
The investigation has unveiled a shocking contrast between the lives of Celeste in Lake Elsinore and Burke in the Hollywood Hills, where security gates and luxury marked his neighborhood, in stark contrast to the humble streets where Celeste spent her early life.
As her parents, Jesus Rivas and Mercedes Martinez, shared their heartfelt statement for the first time, they described her as “a beautiful, strong girl who loved to sing and dance.” The loss of their daughter has reverberated throughout the community, with residents expressing their sorrow and disbelief at the events that have unfolded.
Memorials have been erected in her honor, adorned with flowers, messages, and tokens of remembrance placed by visitors to pay their respects. One neighbor, Kayleigh Cortez, took it upon herself to establish a memorial, even though she did not know Celeste personally.

The memorial has remained a focus for the community — with fresh flowers mixed with ones that have since wilted and a painted rock that reads You Matter set at the front of her home. Many residents share their hope for justice for Celeste, drawing attention to the importance of community in navigating grief and violence.
Currently, as Burke faces trial, the people of Lake Elsinore grapple with the stark realities of violence in their once-quiet town. Their empathy shines through their passion for justice and support for Celeste’s family, who wish only to preserve the memory of their daughter and find justice for the life taken too soon.
