WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has taken legal action against Harvard University, citing the institution's inadequate response to antisemitism on campus. This lawsuit could result in the freezing of federal grants and demands for repayment of existing funds.

Filed in federal court in Massachusetts, the suit reflects the ongoing tension between President Donald Trump's administration and the elite university.

In the lawsuit, the Justice Department asserts, The United States cannot and will not tolerate these failures and brings this action to compel Harvard to comply with federal civil rights law while attempting to recover taxpayer money granted to what it terms a discriminatory institution. Harvard has yet to respond to requests for comments.

This legal move follows stalled negotiations between the university and the Trump administration that had escalated from an investigation into antisemitism to a full-blown conflict. Tensions heightened when the administration slashed over $2.6 billion in research funding and sought to impose restrictions on Harvard hosting international students.

In reaction, Harvard filed lawsuits claiming the institution was being punished for not aligning with the government's perspectives. A federal judge had previously sided with Harvard, halting funding cuts and labeling the antisemitism claims as a smokescreen.

Reports indicate negotiations had previously moved closer to a resolution, with discussions around a potential payment of $500 million for Harvard to regain federal funding access. However, this figure now reportedly stands at $1 billion, as Trump criticized Harvard for its actions.

Since taking office, Trump has targeted elite institutions he believes promote leftist viewpoints and antisemitic behavior, leading to significant funding suspensions.
