Explosions were heard overnight in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, with residents reporting blasts near the western military headquarters and in a southern neighbourhood of the city.
The sound was described as loud enough to trigger car alarms, and witnesses said the explosions occurred around 00:30 local time.
The incidents followed a government ban on drone flights over the city, imposed a few hours earlier, and come one week after clashes erupted between the army and a new coalition of armed groups in the north, which includes forces from the Tigray region.
According to a source linked to the opposition fighters, the blasts were caused by drone strikes. No official statements from Ethiopia’s Prime Minister’s office, the defence ministry or police have confirmed the cause, exact sites or any casualties.
As the situation unfolds, local authorities remain silent, adding to growing uncertainty in the capital amid the wider conflict across the country.
