A passenger described chaos following the collision of two trains near Machu Picchu, Peru. Niels Honkoop recounted how he switched seats before the crash, avoiding severe injury while many near the front were not so fortunate.

I saw staff running around and people crying and people on the floor and chaos erupted, he said, noting the gravity of the situation with many people bleeding and experiencing severe injuries.

Tragically, a train driver lost their life in the incident, with at least 40 others injured after the accident occurred around 1:20 p.m. local time.

Mr. Honkoop detailed that a table in front of him broke, leaving glass scattered and injuries numerous in the carriage. He took personal initiative to assist by distributing painkillers, having had wisdom tooth surgery recently that left him with ample supplies.

British and US nationals were reported to be among the injured, prompting support from the UK Foreign Office and the US embassy in Peru.

Authorities report the collision occurred between Ollantaytambo Station and Aguas Calientes, and investigation into the cause is ongoing. PeruRail has expressed its condolences and committed to assisting those affected.

This tragic event coincides with tension surrounding ticket price disputes among transport providers servicing Machu Picchu, known for its lucrative yet inaccessible tourism routes.

As tourism to the historic site remains a concern with incidents like this, it's significant to address ongoing disputes and ensure safety for all traveling to this UNESCO World Heritage site.
