A gunman was killed and two were injured in a shootout near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. Two policemen were 'slightly injured' in the gun fight, as stated by Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci. The attackers had come to Istanbul from the city of Izmit using a rental car, with two reportedly being brothers.

The Turkish Interior Ministry has identified the deceased gunman as Yunus E.S., connected to a terrorist organization that exploits religion, likely referring to the Islamic State group, although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. Initially, reports indicated that two attackers had died, but Governor Davut Gul clarified that only one was killed.

Injured attackers were identified as brothers Onur Ç and Enes Ç, while the police officers’ injuries were not life-threatening, with one sustaining a shot in the leg and the other in the ear. The ministry's statement mentioned that 'intensive digital communication' was detected among the three assailants, and the interrogation of the surviving suspects is ongoing.

The gunfight unfolded in broad daylight at the consulate located in Istanbul's Besiktas area, with video footage capturing the moment when one of the assailants was shot. Witnesses reported hearing loud gunfire lasting 15 to 20 minutes.

Governor Gul confirmed that no Israeli diplomatic personnel were present in the consulate at the time, which has remained empty for over two years amid strained relations between Turkey and Israel over the Gaza conflict. An investigation into the assault has been initiated.
