A 31‑year‑old British woman died after being stabbed early Sunday morning at Rosenheim station in Bavaria, police said.
The attack took place just before 01:00 local time (00:00 BST), leaving her with severe injuries that proved fatal at a local hospital.
Police arrested a 27‑year‑old German man at the scene immediately after the incident. The background and motive for the attack remain under investigation.
Investigators have asked anyone who may have witnessed an argument or physical altercation at the station late on Saturday or early on Sunday to contact the authorities.
The suspect, from the Fürstenfeldbruck district, will be brought before magistrates later on Sunday, according to German news agency DPA.
It is unclear whether the victim and suspect knew each other or what the woman was doing in Bavaria, said DPA.
Rosenheim, one of the largest cities in Upper Bavaria, is a major rail hub for passengers travelling to Austrian cities including Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
The Rosenheimer Herbstfest – a festival similar to Oktoberfest – is currently being held in the area.
Mayor Abuzar Erdogan said that "there are no indications of a security threat in our city or of any link to our Herbstfest" and that the criminal investigation department is working closely with the public prosecutor’s office to investigate the crime urgently.
A Foreign Office spokesperson told the BBC that the UK is supporting the family of the British woman who died in Germany and is in touch with the local authorities.
