Bangladesh Faces Measles Crisis: Over 100 Children Dead in Recent Outbreak

An alarming measles outbreak in Bangladesh has led to the deaths of over 100 children within a month, prompting an urgent vaccination campaign targeting vulnerable populations.

The campaign began as more than 7,500 suspected measles cases were reported since mid-March, indicating a sharp increase compared to previous years. UNICEF highlights that the outbreak is particularly concerning for infants under nine months old, who are not yet eligible for routine vaccination.

Health officials attribute this surge to gaps in vaccination programs exacerbated by disruptions caused by COVID-19 and political instability in recent years. The government, alongside international organizations like UNICEF and WHO, is mobilizing resources to vaccinate over 1.2 million children, focusing on those who have missed routine vaccinations.

With measles being a highly contagious disease, the health authorities are also working on public education initiatives to help communities identify and prevent the disease. The urgency of the situation emphasizes the need for comprehensive immunization efforts to protect the youngest and most vulnerable populations.
