In brief
Jackie, the bald eagle that has charmed millions via the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, has been diagnosed with severe anemia and is now in critical condition. The eagle, along with her mate Shadow, has been monitored live by Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit based in California. Currently at the Ojai Raptor Center, her packed cell volume has fallen from 17% to 13%, prompting urgent veterinary care. Despite a slight improvement last week, experts warn that her condition remains unstable, and fans are urging for swift medical intervention. Live footage and updates will continue as the situation unfolds.
Live‑Stream Update: Jackie’s Critical Condition
The eagle, which has been streaming from Big Bear Valley’s nest for years, is now in a precarious state. Veterinarians at Ojai Raptor Center report that Jackie’s packed cell volume—a key indicator of blood health—has plunged from a healthy 17% to a dangerously low 13%.
This drop comes after a brief period of improvement noted last week, but the new numbers show her condition is still “critical.” If you’re watching the live stream, you’ll see the window open to the eagle’s nest turn subdued as scientists monitor her oxygen and blood levels.
Jackie has become an iconic figure—highlighting the power of citizen science and wildlife conservation. Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that runs the live webcam, has faced mounting requests from viewers to give the eagle additional care. They’ve worked with local volunteers to ensure the eagle receives the help she needs, but time remains a critical factor.
