In brief

Algeria has announced a troop deployment to Niger, its first foreign military mission since 1973. The soldiers will guard key energy infrastructure near the Libyan border, protecting a pipeline that will bring gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria. The move comes after Niger’s defence minister visited Algiers to seek support against jihadist groups linked to al‑Qaeda and the Islamic State, and follows a period of diplomatic strain that ended in 2025. Algeria’s parliament approved the deployment by a large majority, signalling a shift in its long‑standing policy of non‑intervention abroad. The decision underscores the strategic economic and security interests Algeria has in the Sahel region.

Algeria has announced that it will send soldiers to Niger in its first overseas military deployment since 1973, when forces were dispatched to Egypt during the Arab‑Israeli war.

The troops will be tasked with safeguarding energy infrastructure near the Libyan border, particularly a planned gas pipeline that will transport Nigerian gas through Niger to Algeria, underscoring the country’s economic interests in the Sahel.

Niger’s defence minister recently visited Algiers, seeking assistance to counter jihadist groups linked to al‑Qaeda and the Islamic State; the deployment is a response to that request.

Following a diplomatic rift in 2025 during which Niger recalled its ambassador, the two neighbours are now reorganising ties. Algeria’s parliament approved the mission by a large majority during an emergency session, marking a significant policy shift away from its traditional non‑intervention stance.

While the exact number of soldiers and the timeline have yet to be disclosed, the deployment will utilise Algeria’s 2020 constitutional provision that allows overseas military involvement.

Earlier this year, Algeria donated four military helicopters to Niger, further illustrating its evolving relationship with the country.
