Virudhunagar, a town in southeastern India, is known for its ancient temples and rich heritage. However, it is also home to innovative advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) training.

Professionals like Mohan Kumar play a crucial role in this sector, where they annotate data and train AI models to enhance their capabilities. Kumar notes, My role is in AI annotation. I collect data from various sources, label it, and train AI models so they can recognize and predict objects. Over time, the models become semi-supervised and can make decisions on their own. This remote AI work is part of a broader trend driven by firms relocating jobs to cost-effective rural areas.

Desicrew, a pioneer in cloud farming founded in 2005, epitomizes this model by bringing jobs closer to home rather than forcing rural residents to migrate to urban centers. CEO Mannivannan J K states, Our mission has always been to create world-class careers closer to home, proving that quality work can be delivered from anywhere.”

The company’s work spans various outsourced tasks, with AI-related projects expected to grow significantly in the coming years, currently constituting about 30-40% of their workload.

NextWealth, another noteworthy player founded in 2008, has also embraced cloud farming and employs thousands across smaller towns in India. Co-founder Mythily Ramesh highlights the potential of this workforce, noting that many graduates hail from rural backgrounds, offering firms untapped talent.

Training AI models requires vast amounts of human-labelled data, which positions companies like NextWealth and Desicrew at the forefront of this emerging industry. Ramesh projects that AI could generate up to 100 million jobs in training and validation over the next few years.

Despite being relatively new to AI operations, rural India is proving its capabilities in comparison to traditional tech hubs. Technology advisor KS Viswanathan argues that with effective cloud farming, smaller towns could replicate the success of urban IT sectors from two decades ago. Nonetheless, he stresses the importance of building trust regarding data security standards in these regions.

As rural towns continue to develop as AI training centers, opportunities for local residents grow, creating a more balanced job market and driving economic advancement in previously overlooked areas.
