Suspects Arrested Over Alleged Plot to Bewitch Zambian President
Two individuals detained in Lusaka for attempted witchcraft against Hakainde Hichilema.
Two men have been arrested in Zambia's capital, Lusaka, on charges of attempting to bewitch President Hakainde Hichilema. The suspects, identified as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri, allegedly were hired to use charms to inflict harm on the president, according to police reports released last Friday.
The cultural belief in witchcraft is prevalent in Zambia, where fears often influence societal behaviors and political dynamics. The police statement revealed that the suspects were reportedly recruited by Nelson Banda, brother of MP Emmanuel "Jay Jay" Banda. Notably, Emmanuel, who previously held links to former President Edgar Lungu, was arrested last month in Zimbabwe on robbery charges—which he contests—and has not been seen publicly since his arrest.
Amid claims that these charges are politically motivated, Nelson Banda is said to be on the run from authorities. In addition to charges under the Witchcraft Act, Candunde and Phiri are also facing accusations of possessing charms, professing knowledge of witchcraft, and cruelty to wild animals. The authorities found an assortment of items in their possession, including a live chameleon.
The police revealed that the accused claimed they were promised a fee exceeding 2 million Zambian kwacha (around £58,000 or $73,000) for their alleged plot. The suspects are currently in custody, with a court appearance scheduled soon; however, no specific date has been provided. They have yet to publicly comment on the serious allegations against them.
