Deadly Flooding Strikes Oklahoma and Texas as Storm Threat Continues
A slow-moving storm caused significant damage and loss of life in Oklahoma and Texas, with more rain predicted.
A devastating storm system significantly impacted Oklahoma and Texas on Wednesday, leading to tragic outcomes and emergency responses as heavy rains resulted in dangerous flooding conditions. The National Weather Service has alerted residents to the possibility of further storms and flash floods in the coming days.
In Oklahoma, a sheriff's office reported the death of a man in Pottawatomie County, who was inside a vehicle swept away by floodwaters. As local deputies attempted to rescue him, one officer found himself in a perilous situation, later requiring hospitalization. In addition, Lincoln County witnessed another fatality, as reported by Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesperson Sarah Stewart, where a vehicle became trapped in flood conditions.
Central and southern Oklahoma were hit particularly hard, accumulating up to eight inches of rainfall over a two-day span. Portions of Texas received similarly heavy precipitation, with some areas reporting up to six inches. Weather forecasts indicate that regions in southwestern Oklahoma and parts of Arkansas could expect further rainfall—potentially exceeding two inches—on Thursday, with rainfall rates possibly reaching one to two inches per hour.
Local authorities continue to urge caution as the ground remains saturated and vulnerable to additional flooding threats. Heavy rainfall is expected to intensify, particularly during Thursday evening and overnight hours. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as officials monitor the evolving weather situation.
