Tate Brothers' Departure from Romania Sparks Outcry Amid Ongoing Charges
Romania's Justice Minister demands clarity on the lifting of the Tate brothers' travel ban.
Romania's Justice Minister, Radu Marinescu, is seeking answers as to why the controversial social media figures, Andrew and Tristan Tate, were permitted to leave Romania on Thursday. Having faced multiple serious allegations, including human trafficking, the brothers had been under a travel ban for over two years, until it was recently rescinded. They are now free to travel to the United States.
Minister Marinescu has urged the special prosecution service, DIICOT, to investigate the circumstances surrounding this decision. The Tates, who are both dual citizens of the US and UK, vehemently deny all charges against them, which include forming an organized group aimed at sexually exploiting women, and Andrew Tate is also accused of rape.
In addition to their troubles in Romania, the brothers are dealing with a civil lawsuit in the United States from a woman accusing them of coercive behavior related to sex work, coupled with defamation claims after she testified before Romanian law enforcement. They also face separate rape and trafficking charges in the UK.
Their recent release from restrictions—following several months of house arrest—has ignited fears of political influence, with some speculating whether pressure from the Trump administration affected the prosecutor's judgment. However, on Thursday, the US President denied any knowledge of the situation regarding their release.
Minister Marinescu warned that the Tates could face pre-trial detention should they fail to return to Romania, affirming that legal mechanisms exist to address such issues—potentially alluding to an extradition treaty between the two nations.
The lifted travel ban has led to widespread apprehension among the Romanian public, prompting concerns that the elite may evade accountability while ordinary citizens face harsher treatment under the law.
