Russia and U.S. Explore Cease-Fire Talks Amid Optimism
Diplomacy intensifies as President Putin engages with U.S. envoy, signaling a potential pathway to peace in Ukraine.
In a noteworthy development, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia met with Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy, in Moscow late Thursday, discussing the possibility of a cease-fire in Ukraine. Following this meeting, the Kremlin announced that Putin anticipates an upcoming phone call with President Trump regarding the negotiations.
Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin's spokesman, expressed “cautious optimism” surrounding the prospects for a resolution to the conflict, reflecting a sentiment echoed by national security adviser Michael Waltz after the meeting with Witkoff. This atmosphere of optimism suggests that Russia is keen on continuing dialogue with the U.S. concerning Ukraine.
During the press conference prior to the meeting with Witkoff, Putin indicated his openness to a recently proposed 30-day truce by Ukraine and the U.S. However, he emphasized that he will seek discussions on various conditions, such as the delivery of Western military supplies to Ukraine, that could complicate or detain any potential agreement.
Peskov reported that Witkoff delivered new information to the Russian government, while Putin sent additional signals for President Trump. He made it clear that the outcome of this ongoing diplomatic engagement would depend significantly on the details communicated in Witkoff's briefing to Trump, as well as the timing of their anticipated phone conversation. The last known dialogue between the two leaders took place on February 12, and the timing for a new call remains undetermined.
