In brief

UN high commissioner Volker Turk and Secretary‑General António Guterres have condemned the death of Mohammad el‑Shami, a staffer detained by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. They ask for an independent investigation and the release of seven other UN personnel still held. The death marks the second UN worker killed in Houthi custody since February 2025, amid accusations of spying and a broader crackdown.

(Al Jazeera) UN officials today demanded an independent investigation after the death of Mohammad el‑Shami, a staff member of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who was held in Houthi detention in Yemen.

(Al Jazeera) UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said el‑Shami had been arbitrarily seized in June 2024 along with more than 60 other UN and NGO workers who were accused by the Israel‑backed Houthis of being part of an “American‑Israeli spy network.” The Straits Times notes that el‑Shami had been held since June 2024.

(Al Jazeera) Secretary‑General António Guterres expressed that he was “appalled” by the death and echoed Turk’s call for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding el‑Shami’s demise. The UN also urged the immediate and unconditional release of seven other OHCHR personnel still held by the group.

What remains unconfirmed is the exact cause of el‑Shami’s death. The Houthis have not stated how he died, and the family has only recently been informed of the death, according to Al Jazeera.

El‑Shami was the second UN staffer to die in Houthi custody, after a World Food Programme employee lost his life in February 2025. In total, 72 UN and NGO workers, including el‑Shami, have been detained by the Houthis. In response, the UN paused operations in parts of Houthi‑held Yemen in February 2025 over concerns for the safety of its employees.

(Al Jazeera) The United Nations is seeking answers from the Houthi authorities while urging other international organizations to stay vigilant. The situation remains under‑reported, and the UN’s call for an independent, thorough investigation has not yet been met by the rebels.
