In brief
On Oct. 28, police in Bukkuyum town, Zamfara State, drove off a bandit attack and later recovered over 30 bodies thought to be the attackers. Security forces and residents assisted in the recovery, and operations continue to clear the area of armed groups.
Nigerian police repelled a bandit attack in Bukkuyum town in Zamfara State on Oct. 28, recovering more than 30 bodies believed to be the fleeing attackers several days later, police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar told Xinhua.
The gunfight began when suspected bandits tried to break into Bukkuyum Local Government Area. Most of the attackers fled the scene wounded, Abubakar said. Residents and security operatives later found the bodies scattered across nearby farmlands.
"The corpses are believed to be those of the fleeing bandits due to the superior firepower of the security operatives," Abubakar said.
Police officials affirmed that security operations are ongoing in the area to remove armed groups operating in the region. The incident follows a February attack where armed men rode over 150 motorcycles into a Bukkuyum community, firing indiscriminately and setting buildings ablaze, killing at least 50 people and kidnapping dozens of women and children.
Banditry and kidnapping have been recurrent problems in Nigeria’s northwest, and authorities continue to engage in efforts to restore order in the volatile zone.
