Sharath Jois, a distinguished figure in the Ashtanga yoga tradition and the grandson of its founder, passed away on Monday at the age of 53. His family confirmed his death after he suffered a heart attack while hiking near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mr. Jois became a highly respected yoga master, often attracting crowds of eager students to his workshops in India and around the globe. The rigorous Ashtanga yoga style, rooted in ancient Sanskrit and Hindu practices, has gained immense popularity, largely thanks to his grandfather, Krishna Pattabhi Jois, who introduced it to international audiences in the 1990s. This intensive practice has become a cornerstone in the fitness culture, celebrated by many, including celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. After taking on his grandfather's legacy, Mr. Jois adopted the title of “Paramaguru,” meaning “lineage holder,” and was affectionately referred to as the “boss” in Mysore, India, the heart of Ashtanga yoga. His workshops there quickly became highly coveted events, often filled to capacity within minutes of registration opening. “He was an excellent yoga teacher, one of the best,” noted Isha Singh Sawhney, a student who co-authored his book “Ageless” in 2018.As the Ashtanga community mourns his loss, his influence and teachings will undoubtedly continue to inspire yoga practitioners worldwide, ensuring that his legacy lives on in the hearts and practices of many.
